Choosing a 3 Gun Rifle
The 3 gun rifle is probably the most engaging/alluring/interesting/fascinating of the 3 guns. With the popularity of the AR-15 and the AK-47, most gun enthusiasts already have a carbine rifle that will work as a 3 Gun rifle. Even though most of you probably already have a 3 gun appropriate rifle, there are definite advantages to setting one up specifically for 3 Gun. Little changes can make a big difference when it comes to timed events such as 3 Gun competitions.
Some changes are expensive to make, others are cheap but time consuming, and still others are cheap and hardly take any time to implement...these are the things that ALL 3 Gun rifle shooters should take advantage of.
First things first...the AR-15 has a definite advantage at 3 gun competitions, and will stay that way as long as the rules don’t change. For 3 Gun, you want a rifle that is dead-nuts reliable, fast on follow up shots, and is accurate. You’ll also need a 3 Gun appropriate optic or sighting system and quality magazines that feed well into your rifle and that are easy to throw into place in a hurry. Also, depending on the particular 3 Gun competition that you are shooting in and which class you are shooting in, you may even need a sling and/or a bipod. When it comes to winning or even performing above average in a 3 Gun competition, the most important factor is having a 3 Gun rifle that performs consistently and reliably. It doesn't matter how good of a shot you are, how fast you can move from target to target, or how fast you can reload if your 3 Gun rifle isn't reliable. You can only be as good as your equipment allows you to be...and surprising as it may be to some of you, this does NOT mean that you need to spend alot of money.
