Using a "Regular" Standard 16" M4 Style Barrel on a 3 Gun Rifle
Lets say you’ve got a typical M4 style 16” barrel AR15. What all are you giving up?
Typical Specs:
Trigger: stock 7 pound single stage
Barrel: 16” 1:9 twist.
Compensator: none. Typically an A2 birdcage, which provides nothing in terms of recoil compensation
Upper and Lower receivers: 7075 forged receivers
Gas system: carbine length, non-adjustable. Carbine length gas system is said to have slightly more felt recoil than rifle length. Adjustable gas blocks allow you to reduce the gas coming back at the bolt to only what is required to operate the bolt, reducing recoil.
Buttstock: 6 position buttstock
Handguard: A2 handguard. Not free float. Accuracy is hurt and there are point of impact shifts with non-free float handguards.
Notes: The lowest priced M4 style AR15 is good enough to win just about any local 3 gun competition. Honestly, most shooters are the holdback, NOT the gun. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with making your rifle better.
